The magnificent Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida recently hosted the Society Of Seniors Championships. The two Joe Lee designed 18 hole championship golf courses at Quail Ridge proved a formidable duo for the players. The SOS Championships are one of the most prestigious senior amateur events held next to the US Senior Amateur for amateur golfers with handicaps of 3 or less.
Founded in 1983, The Society of Seniors is home to the finest senior amateur golfers in the world. The 900-plus members include every living U.S. Senior Amateur Champion, numerous Walker Cup players and captains, and former U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur, British Amateur and British Senior Amateur Champions.
Three proper Floridians took home the hardware played for three glorious days on the pristine grounds of Quail Ridge in absolutely perfect weather, if somewhat windy at times.
For Rick Woulfe, it was a case of deja vu all over again in the 2014 SOS Dale Morey division Seniors Championship. Back in 2006 Woulfe, an attorney by trade who lives in Fort Lauderdale and is one the most-decorated amateur golfers in Florida history, won the Morey at Quail Ridge– the long time treasured home of the Society. And on Thursday he won his second Morey and his second at Quail Ridge by shooting a final-round score of two-under par 70 for a 54 hole total of 209 over the South Course- two shots better than Bob Stephens of Indianapolis, Indiana. “It’s always great to win, especially at my age,” said the 64 year old Woulfe, past president of the Florida Sate Golf Association and a member of the SOS Board of Directors.
In the John Owens division for Super Seniors over the North Course, Van Lefferdink of nearby Juno Beach, Florida, eked out a one stroke victory over Ted Smith of Wilkinson, Indiana- the second-straight year Smith has been the bridesmaid.
In the Grand Masters division, Bill Robischon of nearby Tequesta, Florida shot 74-73-74 for a two shot victory over Harry Cain of Williamsburg, Virginia. Cain was also the runner up in 2013.
And once again the SOS had a great time at Quail Ridge. As always, the hospitality afforded the members of the SOS was off the charts. Director of Golf Charlie Bowie and his illustrious staff never missed a beat, and numerous Quail Ridge members volunteered on the course as spotters. SOS wanted to recognize their wonderful sponsors Callaway, Enterprise and National Car Rental.
